We lived just across a little gravel road from the beach on Tongass Narrows. Seeing orca pods and discovering marine life in low tide tide pools was just as much a part of my childhood exploratory phase as learning to ride a bike and learning the tough lesson of why not to pull on cat tales.
It rains up there some most all the time. Not like in Seattle where it's grey all the time and the overcast is enough to turn even the brightest of go-getter's into the downiest of debbie's...It rains really hard for hours, days, and weeks. Which if you're an enterprising kindergartener, means that over time you'll learn how to build a really cool earthen dam at the edge of the playing field with your friends and watch a reservoir fill up before your eyes.
And step on approximately 7 nails in 6 years. I say approximately because I don't remember the exact number, only that one time a nail went so deep it hurt to walk for weeks. Accident prone kids like me are lucky to be blogging about seemingly mundane childhood experiences at all!
