What happens to your body if you drink a Coke right now?

Comments

that's hectic. mad hectic. and now, back to my beer.

find stuff that beer does to your system and keep me posted!

Tell me more about the bad things...

compare this with coffee - which if taken without sugar and milk is actually very good for your body - being extremely high in anti-oxidents ... so life is bearable

Quite interesting. I always figured all that sugar couldn't be good for you. And what happens if you now throw alcohol (rum, to be specific) into the mix? I'm guessing the liver now has to work doubletime.

And if we drink, say, 4 of these such mixed drinks within an hour, and then heap a big slice of pepperoni pizza on top of all of that a half hour later??

Something tells me I would not like to hear what the result of all of that would be...

Hmm. I think I also remember someone saying, a long time ago, that if you spilled some coke on your car, and then left it to dry, it would ruin the paint job on the car.

I'll have to skip the next can of coke.... haha

And don't think that the solution is to drink diet Coke or diet Pepsi with NutraSweet in it... that is even worse: you could end up with multiple sclerosis or other neurological disorders... check out http://www.soundandfury.tv/pages/trailer.html for the trailer of "Sweet Misery" (the truth about aspartame)... drink water or better still, nice healthy raw milk from cows kept in pasture and fed only on grass & hay (their natural food).

see www.realmilk.com for a HEALTHY alternative to sodas - packed with vitamins, minerals & enzymes and being suppressed by the processed foods industry and the governments they pay for.
This is a story that reads like drinking a coke but is there a research paper to back this smooth story somewhere?
[this is good]

Thanks for sharing that! I'm sure glad I don't drink soda. A lot of sugar products have the same effects. As the info above suggests, sugar can become highly addictive as the body starts to depend on it for dopamine production. I think the best option is to avoid refined sugar as much as possible - a surprisingly difficult task, though not impossible.

There's quite a substantial "sugar addiction" literature that documents the bad effects of sugar described above.

Was this blog posted somewhere public on Vox? I seem to be getting a lot of mail lately about it! I just posted a link at the bottom to the original article (seems I forgot to post that originally and was contacted by the author. That sort of makes me feel like more of a blog big shot that I really am).

Oh yeah, and I've been freezing in the dark for the last three days since our Seattle Winter Storm 2006 damaged most of the electrical infrastructure in the Seattle area last Thursday. Hip Hip Hooray for warm offices.
Nick, it's on del.icio.us popular, hence the extra traffic/comments.

One quibble with the original article: not sure about the accuracy of the rest of it, but the ">60 minutes" section says that the caffeine's "diuretic properties come into play." I think caffeine's diuretic properties have not been established.
I'm drinking a Coke right now, and will probably have several more throughout the day, just like normal. It goes great with cigarettes.

That's why God gave us Absolut.

This is pretty horrific. My friend basically lives on Coke and coffee, should send this to him.
[esto es genial]
This is simply not true. I drink loads of coke and don't experience spikes of sugar that send me bouncing off the walls, don't wet my trousers from its incredible diuretic potency, do not lay down fat till I look like the michelin man and I certainly don't crash at the end. You have to pay good money for drugs these days, and buying a four-pack of coke simply will not cut it..
I agree somewhat about this article being overly-alarmist. We could always ask the author, there's a link to his article at the bottom of the blog; maybe Wade can explain to us what we're second-guessing.

Alcohol blocks glucose production in the liver. ALWAYS drink your coke with whiskey!

http://www.diabetes.org/type-1-diabetes/alcohol.jsp

How does alcohol add to your chances of having low blood sugar? It has to do with your liver.

Normally, when your blood sugar level starts to drop, your liver steps in. It goes to work changing stored carbohydrate into glucose. Then it sends the glucose out into the blood, which helps you avoid or slow down a low blood sugar reaction.

However, when alcohol enters your system, this changes. Alcohol is a toxin. Your body reacts to alcohol like a poison. The liver wants to clear it from the blood quickly. In fact, the liver won't put out glucose again until it has taken care of the alcohol. If your blood glucose level is falling, you can quickly wind up with very low blood sugar.

This is why drinking as little as 2 ounces of alcohol (about 2 drinks) on an empty stomach can lead to very low blood sugar.

When you mix alcohol and exercise, you increase the risk of going low. This can happen because exercise helps lower your blood sugar levels. Let's say you just played a couple of hard sets of tennis. You have a beer after the match. But in the hours after the game, your body is still working. It is replacing the energy your muscles used up. To do this, it clears glucose from the blood and adds it to the muscles' store. This is why exercise can cause your blood sugar level to go down.

If you take insulin or diabetes pills, they too are working to clear glucose from your blood. Unless you eat or your liver adds glucose to your blood, you could be heading for a low blood sugar level. If you drink a beer, the alcohol will stop your liver from sending out any glucose. Your chances of going low are even greater.

Check with your health care provider to see if it's OK to combine alcohol with your diabetes medications.

Low blood sugar when drinking is less of a risk for those with type 2 diabetes who control their diabetes with meal planning and exercise alone.

Really bad writing. "This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way" is a non-sequiter. You're just saying it's pleasurable. What's wrong with feeling good?

Here's another one: "Your pupils dialate, your blood pressure rises." So? For how long? How much? I'm going to walk upstairs after I press "post" and my blood pressure will rise. My pupils will dilate when I turn out the lights. Tomorrow morning, THE SUN WILL MAKE MY PUPILS SHRINK!!!! OH MY LORDY!!!!

There's a new breed of person who love to tell you how the things you enjoy can KILL YOU!!!!
All they want is power. They want you to think of them when you're having fun. They want to be the voice in your head, ruining the experience jusssssssst a little teensy bit. They want to make your life a little less fun. Then they'll have more fun. If you hate the company Coca-Cola, that's fine, but you're just fear mongering about inconsequential crap. It's anti-corporate, so I bet I get it forwarded to me about six thousand times in the next week.

If you really care about saving lives, get rid of bathtubs and bicycles. Thousands of children and adults are killed each year by them.

"HEY MAN, THAT'S JUST YOUR OPINION. DON'T YOU KNOW THAT OBESITY IS A PROBLEM NOW? MILLIONS OF KIDS ARE OVERWEIGHT BECAUSE GEORGE BUSH WANTS OIL! BUT I GUESS YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THE CHILDREN. YOU WANT THEM TO DRINK POISON COKE SO THE CORPORATE GREED CAN SUPPRESS THE TRUTH AND CONTINUE ON IN THIS COUNTRY AND THEY WILL HAVE TO RELY ON WESTERN MEDICINE THAT THEY CAN'T AFFORD!!!! YOU GO AHEAD AND WATCH YOUR AMERICAN IDOL SHOW AND DRINK YOUR BEER AND COKE BUT JUST REMEMBER THAT IT'S JUST YOUR OPINION!!! I BET YOU THINK BIG TOBACCO TELLS THE TRUTH, TOO!!!!! I BET IF YOU LIVED IN GERMANY IN THE 30'S, YOU WOULD VOTE FOR ADOLPH HITLER!!! GET OUT OF HERE, REPUBLICAN!!!"

Woo Hoo - my body's a walking science experiment!

What I'm really dying to know is what happens when you ingest RedBull - not that fizzy, watered down western stuff, but the original, full-strength Thai version.

I saw this a little while ago and immediately gave up drinking Coke for . . . about a week. Now I'm back on the Coca-Cola happiness wagon.
This comment is awesome, and an excellent example of the kind of comment I would like to see a heck of a lot more of around here. Let's provoke some more disapproving rant-blathers!

20 years from now we'll all be filing class action suits against Big Cola... but for now, pass the 2-liter!

Never again touch another coke!
Wow *putting the can in my hand down* that is madness!

My husband and I stopped drinking Coke or Pepsi because of the cafeine was giving my husband very bad headaches coupled with depression that was really really bad.

I always felt like I was going through my change because I would get hot and cold flashes because of the surgar content.

As we would say you could take off rust with coke so you could imagine what it is doing to your body especially to your bones.

That stuff should be taken off the market completely but that will never happen.

Just take a look at all the over weight children there are.

Wow who on earth told you coffee is good for you!

Every time you drink a cup of coffee (or tea or coke) it dehydrates your body and gives your nervous system a jolt. It gives your liver and kidneys a battering, overworks your adrenal glands and robs your body and brain of water. Caffiene is a strong diuretic - meaning it makes you produce excess urine. This will speed up your aging process rapidly and makes your nerves literally stand on end. No way can this be good for you - sorry!

[this is good]

simply good.
